These four chairs are from the estate of William (Bill) Elloway who was an accomplished woodwork tutor at Loughborough College between 1952-83 and personal friend of Edward Barnsley. Both Barnsley and Peter Waals worked as design advisors for the college which became an important training ground for the next generation of craftsmen. These chairs are reputed to have been created by students at the college between 1952-3 most probably as exam or exhibition pieces and most likely under the direction of Elloway or Barnsley. Each bears the carved name of the student who constructed it and some are dated also.
